Mount St. Helens

What vacation would be good without a drive out to see something that blew up 20 years ago? Apparently not ours! We drove 6 hours out of the way to see Mount St. Helens with the in-laws. Thankfully, the exhibit for the volcano was sort of awesome, they had the geographical impact of the Mount St. Helens explosion in a scale model with lights showing the impacts of the blast, ash, lava, etc. Pretty cool.

This is probably one of the busiest pages I have made in a long time. I really wanted to pack in the pictures on this one so I made them a variety of sizes, based on importance of the photo. My favorite thing? The tiny erupting volcano that I made with scraps and glitter glue.

It's a vintage card soiree

When I was beginning my scrapbooking journey, I was all about the bright colorful papers that were out there. Then I discovered a love for My Mind's Eye, something anyone who's read this blog for more than a week probably isn't surprised about. That love brought me out of the world of cheap paper packs and into using "good paper" for everything. Eventually turning my style into a (hopefully) shabby chic sort of look. But I have always adored a certain look that I could never bring myself to attempt. Until today.

The vintage. Gorgeous. I love it. Lace. Graphics. *swoon* One of my favorite bloggers, Charity Becker, epitomizes this look for me. I adore her work, and (long pause) she probably gets tired of me idolizing it.

A couple of months ago she was the guest blogger when Graphic 45 made their Scrapbooksteals.com debut. Oh wow. I caved and bought paper that I wasn't certain I'd ever, ever use. Then I found some on clearance on a rare trip to a craft store. And bought two more lines.

So now I have three sets of paper that I gush over but don't touch. I'm not a hoarder by nature so they begin taunting me. Taunting I tell you! And that brings us to today. I made my first two cards out of Graphic 45 paper.

Both use their Communique line for the papers. The flowers and crochet ribbon are G45 Staples. I also used Ranger Distress Inks - walnut stain and fired brick, Crackle Accents, and Studio G glitter glue on both. The top card also has two brads from stash. The large center flower brad is Paper Studios Affinity.

Hopefully I did them justice, because that first cut was torture.

MCM 94

Sometimes crafting with a sketch "clicks" sometimes it doesn't. Know the feeling? Well, this week's sketch never clicked. Maybe because I was trying to make masculine/not frilly cards. Boo, because her cards were super cute! Anyway, I tried a couple of different variations of Kristy's MCM 94 and this was the best of the bunch.

MWM Pearl 3

Wow! I can't believe that I managed to crank out a Mid-Week Mojo on the day it was posted. Awesome-sauce. Today's MWM featured a sketch from the lovely Kristy Lee using Kiwi Lane Templates. Now I sort of own some, they live at my mom's, I use them there and she uses them when I'm not. So to work on the page *today* I had to improvise, because if you've never seen them they're pretty cool. Basically, they're a border stencil and the next best thing to tracing and cutting is to use a kit that has die cut borders in it! Right?!  Or pull out your die cutting machine, but I chose option "A" because I was lazy.

Dads' Birthdays

Our dad's birthdays are about 2 weeks apart so when I make cards for mine I have typically made my father-in-law's at the same time. 

Neither card is fabulous, but the one for my dad is funny to me. The boys call him Papa. I was rearranging some scrap stash and found these old rub-ons (K and Company, I think) and they matched some American Crafts Campy Trails that was hanging out on the desk so I set to work to put the two together for a card for Pawpawpawpawpaw. Bwahahaha. He would hate if I pronounced it that way, but it was a fun play on words and a simple card to make.

For my FIL, I gave a "wilderness" badge. They went on vacation with us, well for part of our trip. Before joining us in Seattle they visited the Sequioas, Yosemite, went with us to Mount St. Helens, on a whale watching trip, a jet boat trip through Hell's Canyon, ID, and were talking about driving up to Yellowstone when we left. A lot of wilderness watching, right?

Cards for Heroes

I posted yesterday about how a friend and I had made red shirts for her to wear to support her family. Well, while everyone I knew was out being patriotic and supporting the community in the heat my little guys were napping. I was doing what I could to support our heroes too - I made three more cards to send to OWH. Simple, funny, quirky. I love them and hopefully someone else does too.

Beep vrooom

Mmmm, I love when MME comes up with a random extra sketch to follow. Especially on a day when I was feeling the need to scrap but soooooo wasn't feeling ready to jump in and design my own page! I'm so lazy sometimes. LOL

Anyway, this sketch isn't part of their normal challenge rotation, but there is a prize that I'd love! Printed tapes/Washi/Designer Tapes - whatever you call them I have this obsession with having them and *need* more. 

I started by flipping the sketch for horizontal pics because that one in the center with the car is a huge part of the story I wanted to tell. Squirrel loved this day of vacation - the Aquarium and vintage race cars! He's still asking to go back to both and it's worse when he sees pictures of them. Then I pulled out every die cut from MME that I had that went with these pages from Good Day Sunshine and sort of dumped them on the page with the actual event tickets and sorted them until I liked how it looked.

MWM Pearl 2 - Potato Cheese

This week's Scrapbooksteals.com Mid Week Mojo was by one of the design team, Katrina Hunt. I love this sketch! It's got a lot of fun potential but still a fairly clean sketch. 

For my interpretation I used pics of Squishy and American Crafts Campy Trails. The colors worked perfectly with his shirt, plus there were all those fab little banners that I could fussy cut instead of trying to make them on my own or pull out the Cameo. 

I did pull out a machine though - my sewing machine and stitched the banner into place. I also sewed on two other embelly pieces just to accent them a little bit. 

Also, really fun on this one is the addition of the DIY Thickers. Eek! How crazy fun. I used the new green Pop! beads. I love how they look but they kept flaking off and rolling all over my desk, which was ever so slightly annoying. To solve the problem for this page, I just coated them in glossy accents. So in the pic they look really solid and thick, but in person you can see the texture, but you can't get to the beads. Perfect.

Half way Challenge

Because this year is a leap year the exact half way through 2012 hit while we were on vacation - July 1st. Which is pretty much perfect for me since MME issued a challenge to scrap that halfway point in some way - the previous 6 months, the month, the day. I chose pictures of Squirrel enjoying the Seattle Aquarium on the first. This was definitely one of the highlights of vacation. He loved it and has asked several times for us to take him back!

As the starting point of my page I used the scrapbooksteals.com MWM sketch of the week, Pearl 2. I took it to the next level by expanding it out into a double page layout. Which is something I don't normally worry about doing, but when you have to get in all those vacation pics it is a handy trick and a good personal challenge. Nine pics on two pages is pretty good given how often I do a single picture per page. 

Paper, brads, jute and ribbon are all various MME collections: The Good Life, Lush, Laundry Line, Abbey Road, and Follow your Heart. The starfish border is from the Silhouette store. All the paper was inked with Distress Inks - Broken China and/or Walnut Stain. I also did a little machine stitching. Ribbon flowers were adhered using Scotch Quick Dry Adhesive and then have a Studio G glitter glue center.

Renewed Challenge

Things have been crazy at work and the Scientist is really needing to finish up his PhD which led me to make a tough family choice - continuing being a huge stress ball and rarely see my hubby -or- make a change. Considering we couldn't afford for me to quit, I chose to demote myself within the company and work fewer hours so he can work more. While not common, this does happen at times (IMO, more people just quit but benefits are good). For the first time in over 6 years I am no longer a manager of any kind. I worked three shifts as just an employee last week and it was so weird, novel, refreshing. I'm sure at some point the joys of it will unnerve me, but for now I'll revel in it's glory.

I'm not already reveling in is the $$$ part. Demotion = pay cut = less money for scrappy fun.

The bonus of "less money for scrappy fun" = a new challenge. There just isn't money to buy a lot of gifts and things so I'm going to be making as many Christmas presents, home decor items, birthday party decorations (you get the idea), the big challenge being that I need to figure out how to customize it to the individual/event from my current stash.

I've known for a month that this was coming and sort of loaded up while I could! LOL. The only thing I didn't buy that I know I need is some black vinyl for redecorating the boys' room. Their Christmas and birthday from us (unless grandparents chip in!) is a bunk bed, bedding, and theme change. Right now it is mostly decorated with leftover decorations from Squirrel's Cars party last year, some of those will stay as I'm switching it to a Toy Themed room (sort of Toy Story-esque, but less focus on just those guys and more just on toys). Hence the vinyl, I want to do large silhouettes of some recognizable toys to hang on the wall. Hoping to see some on SS before November so I can whip them up in time for a birthday party with the same theme (and just relocate as I did last year).

For this challenge the rules are:

• Goal Completion Date of Dec. 31, 2012
• Spend no more than $15 per boy birthday party on decorations/flair (August and December birthdays), excluding vinyl
• Spend no more than $20 per month on other crafty fun, not including adhesive
• Spend no more than $40 while at Scrapbooksteals warehouse while there in October
• Create 100 projects: Pages = 1, Cards = 1, duplicated cards of 3 or more = 2 per set
• Continue creating cards for OWH

Notice I'm not trying to spend "no money until ## done." That didn't work so well, and this is really about correcting a spending habit as much as about using up hoarded materials. :)

To get the crafting party started off right, here's my first set of projects. These are the last of the cards I could make before needing to ship off a box for the We Are Memory Keepers card drive for Operation Write Home. With the grandparents living in St. Louis there are many many (so many many) trips to the Magic House and the St. Louis zoo - and that means I always have tons of pictures from those weekend trips that need to get scrapped. Nothing makes that task easier than an awesome multi-picture sketch. This week's Scrapbooksteals.com Turquoise 6 was no exception - designed by guest sketcher Julie Koets this one really packed them in, especially when I cropped two of the picture spots into two extras! Awesome.

I also packed a little extra something into this one - the challenge over at the Paper Girls Challenge Blog was to use Subway Art in a project. Subway Art being a body of text arranged horizontally and vertically in an assortment of fonts.

Well, in place of journaling I "Subway Arted." I laid out the text in the Silhouette software and just wrote the words with the sketch pens, easy peasy. I like that the format allowed me to include key words but made the page just a little different than what I'd normally do.

National Scrapbooking Day = lots of hard work

Saturday was National Scrapbooking Day, which somehow translated into "weekend" for me. Wow! Did I do a lot?! I've decided that after this weekend I'm doing a little reset on the whole project challenge. I'm pretty certain that I've done about 50 projects and have cheated a couple of times on the thing anyway, but we're pretty much equal so it's whatever.

To start the weekend off I did the Scrapbooksteals.com online crop challenges.

Challenge 1/Turquoise 1 by guest sketcher Misty Buck

I used BasicGrey papers for this - an older kit called Origins. I bought it on clearance right after falling in love with their Oliver collection. This is the first time I used it and think I may have fallen in love with BG all over again! The buttons were stash, but some are covered with stickers from the kit. Thickers are Amy Tangerine. Mini Alphas are Jenni Bowlin.

Challenge 2: Turn back time. Pics had to be from before the individual was 25 or younger.

Start them young

This is almost all Amy Tangerine Sketchbook, including the fussy cut flowers. There's one piece of misted paper from me testing out the mists when they came in (I did say that I cheated on the challenge, right?!). The mini alphas are Jenni Bowlin. The Thickers are also Amy Tangerine. Notable for this page - the pink card in back swirls out to show more journaling. This pic was taken at my grandma's just after Papa died, the grown-ups were making arrangements and I was busily using one of my Christmas presents. Context is interesting for the future but isn't the point of the page so I wanted it hidden.

Challenge 3: Sassy Spring. Needed to have spring colors and a flower.

This one is all Echo Park This & That. I love this collection. It very much complements the colors I put on the boys. It was a fun challenge to work with - incorporating a flower (these are from Prima) into the page, especially with such masculine papers, but I felt that the flower just spoke spring and not girlie. 

Challenge 4: Stitching. The inspiration piece was a quilt block and the final project had to have some sort of stitching on it. 

Ties that bind

I literally cut up my oldest scraps into 2x2 in squares and stitched them (and the picture) together with my machine (a first using that for me!). Then, remembering some older quilts I've seen in this fashion I "joined" corners with purple string or with brads (stash). The journaling tag's brown border was scrap lefttover from this week's MCM and I think it's Fancy Pants. The inside is more misting practice. Mini alphas are Jenni Bowlin. Thickers are American Crafts.

Then I moved on to a couple that Echo Park had.

NSD Challenge 3: scrap lift from the design team. I lifted the idea of the quilt on a card from Kandis Smith's project.

This & That makes another appearance here in everything except the machine stitching and those mini alphas (Jenni Bowlin). Having already sewn something together this weekend I thought that her card design would be a good opportunity to practice my stitching abilities!

Again, more Origins. The stitching here is really subtle, and it needed to be with all the paper mixing I did! It's a border around the two smaller pics. Then the mixed fonts - the word "passionately" is from the Origins stickers and "driven" are foam Thickers. 

The regular Paper Girls Challenge Blog Challenge (#7) was to make an Artist Trading Card (aka ATC), taking inspiration from their blog hop.

I'd never done an ATC before so this was a little weird for me. Apparently they get traded around by crafters, almost like baseball cards. Now to find a card swap I can join so I can get more practice with these guys! Everything from this card was from my scrap folder, but I'm fairly certain that the card itself was Fancy Pants Design. 

Two cards and a mini

In the last several months I have spent more and more time online building my craft: gaining inspiration, reading blogs, learning techniques, supporting other crafters. As part of that, I've joined not only the Facebook community on Scrapbooksteals but frequently post on the status messages and contests of a number of my favorite manufacturers. And last month I won a fantastic kit for doing so!  Amy Tangerine Sketchbook from American Crafts. YES!! Can you say amazing?! And so much - I thought it'd be a few pieces but this is a whole kit.  I love all the colors that Amy Tan uses.

It's almost like there's two sides of me - My Mind's Eye (slightly romantic) and Amy Tangerine (way fun). All through my childhood and adolescence I would pendulum from one color spectrum/design style to the other so that really isn't a surprise to me. In junior high I was all about the day glow and by my sophomore year all I wanted was Victorian era-esque furniture and burgundy/hunter green *everything.* Seriously. Back to brights in the dorm, plum in the bedroom when we got married, and you can see the edge of our current bed in the pics below. Maybe I just think this is weird because my parents have had variations of peach and green in their room for my entire life.

Anyway, when I opened up Sketchbook this afternoon I immediately knew that I had to use it for the mother's day cards that I needed to make - my mom and MIL.

This one's for MIL - had to keep it flat for mailing, but I LOVE it.

Fussy cutting, washi tape flower and dimensional stickers make this fun,
but not suitable for mailing. I'll hand deliver to my mom on Mother's Day weekend. 

I got the idea for the washi tape flower from Scrapbooksteals.com's How To'sday a few weeks back. Misty Buck did a fantastic job and I've been waiting for an opportunity to lift that project!

This week I've also been busily making my second mini. I really like the way it came out  --- so much more interactive and decidedly a step up from the last one. Now trying to decide if I want to keep it or gift it. I added little scraps that say where to journal or add pics (with dimensions) in case I gift. Hmm...

 This time I used (mostly) MME Lush2. There's a couple of scraps from other MME collections, ink is Colorbox, pennant stickers by Jenni Bowlin, ticket sticker is Glitz Designs, stamps from Girl's Paperie, Zing Embossing Powder, red twine from Jillibean Soup, Prima Flowers, and library envelope from Silhouette Studio.

Scrapbooksteals MWM - Amethyst 10

Amethyst 10. Yes, you read that correctly. I can't believe we are already done with this series. It's been a good time! I realized while compiling all the pictures into one photo album that I didn't link nearly enough of them to the Scrapbooksteals blog! Really need to be better about that - if only because it would have made the task of organizing them a little easier.  Nevermind the fab prizes they send for the weekly winners.

Ah, and speaking of prizes, this gem series' prize is from My Mind's Eye (which if you haven't figured it out yet - MME is one of my absolute favorite scrapping brands) and it is to DIE for. A girl can dream...

Anyway, Amethyst 10. I took this adorable picture of Squishy while we were on the road (DH was driving). We were headed to my parents' house and both boys were just so.very.excited. 

The papers are all Authentique Blissful. There's a lot of fussy cutting that went into this, though the photo corners and trims are die cuts. Twine is MME. There's a variety of brads - AC Chap, Paper Studio Affinity, MME Follow Your Heart. I lightly chalked all the edges with Pebbles chalks just to give it a soft depth.

another clock

I made another clock face today. Instead of just altering an old one like I did the other day I actually bought a clearanced charger, drilled a whole in it and added the clock mechanism. This clock is for our bedroom, The Scientist has been asking for one in there for ages and I just didn't like anything enough to buy it! But I LOVE this one.

Today's clock face is Authentique Blissful. I fussy cut the "numbers" from a Blissful 6x6 pad.  ColorBox Chestnut Roan to ink the edges, Pebbles Chalks, and Imaginese D-stress to age it a bit. Brads were stash.

Unfortunately, the clock kept time before adding that center Authentique icon. Because it isn't now I assume that means that the paper is obstructing it in some way and I'll have to make a run to the craft store for a longer... whatever that part is called!

In other news, it's still April so I'm still trying to be intentional with some random acts of kindness and last week someone stole the tip jar from my workplace. The girls who were working were really upset about it - partly because they need that money for real life expenses (whereas I use that money for crafting!).  So I slipped the tips I'd earned the previous week (they get distributed weekly based on hours worked) back into the pool. Questions about the theft came up in our shift meeting last night and everyone was getting super negative about the situation so I told them a customer had made a donation. That lifted the mood instantly. It was kind of fun, though I think my boss was onto me because of the weird way he said to pass the thanks to the anonymous customer.

Then today, one of the girls made a comment about only having a few cans of food in her house (payday isn't until next week). This week's tips bought her some produce, okay, a lot of produce. I just couldn't help myself.

Scrappy weekend

Oh man did I get a lot done this weekend! I finished up my page for the Paper Girls Challenge Blog, worked on a couple of extra Mid Week Mojo's (still trying to get all the original ones done), and a card. I had lots of fun, can you tell?!!

MWM 5 - When I started scrapbooking (just over 3 years ago) I always did  2 pagers, but I haven't in a while and this 5 picture spread was a challenge! I cropped some of the pictures down and squeezed an extra two on this page about hanging out at the park during our very warm winter! Papers and stickers are Fancy Pants Rough and Tough. Then, I made the following card for The Paper Variety's current challenge - we were to scraplift an idea from somewhere on their blog to use as inspiration for a project. I chose to "lift" a tutorial about creating a title with twine by Kate.

Papers for this card are Authentique Blissful, brad is Paper Studios Affinity, ink is Prima Terra, and twine is WRMK Sew Easy Yellow.

And finally, this morning I made a card using the Scrapbooksteals.com MCM #81. Papers and embellishments are all Authentique Blissful. Ink is Terra by Prima. Glitter glue by Crayola.
